About the Art

Rare and beautiful representation of athe goddess standing in pratylidha with the right foot resting on an elephant. Three of her four hands hold a kapala, a vajra and a parasol. Her head is covered with a tiara of a type very close to that generally characterizing Indra the king of the gods. The partial obliteration of the facial features by the worship received by the original artifact probably caused the obliteration of the horizontal third eye that must have adorned her forehead. Despite a few minor accidents, this work is a perfect illustration of the virtuosity of Newar craftsmen in the art of embossed copper. An inscription is also engraved on the base of the lotus.
