About the Art

Life of Buddha is a painting depicting the different stages of Buddha’s life. From the Garbhapravesh- entering into the womb of Mayadevi to the mahaparinirvana of Buddha can be seen in this painting. Lord Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra surrounded by golden torana with his disciples Sariputta and Maudgalyayana is in the middle of the painting. The 12 stages of Buddha life starts from the middle bottom of the painting in the clockwise direction with the help of 88 figures drawn in this painting. The stages of the Buddha’s life are as below:

  1. Garbhaprabesh or Mayadevi’s dream
  2. Birth of Buddha
  3. Buddha enjoying his worldly life
  4. The four excursions (seeing the old man, sick person, dead and saint) 
  5. The great departure from the palace 
  6. The great renunciation (Chudakarma)
  7. Trail of asceticism (Duskarcharya)
  8. Abandoning asceticism, accepting the rice pudding offered by Sujata
  9. The great victory over Mara 
  10. Enlightenment
  11. Dharmachakra pravartan
  12. Buddha’s visit to Kapilvastu
  13. Mahaparinirvana
