About the Art

Marāvijaya, a central Buddhist narrative, tells the story of Siddhartha Gautama’s journey to enlightenment, where he faced numerous obstacles. Despite his efforts to follow the middle way, he still encountered Mara, which can be divided into four types: Klesha Mara, Mrityu Mara, and Skandha Mara. During his enlightenment, Gautama called upon the earth goddess Prithvi Mata to attest to his attainment of Nirvana and the Ten Perfections. The earth trembled as he touched the ground and as he understood the four noble truths and the Pratityasamudpada (law of dependent origination).
